Cleaning concrete and clay roof tiles with the appropriate pressure will not damage them. In fact, power washing with some pressure is the most effective cleaning solution for most Southern California tile roofs.
You may see the soft washing "magic results" on youtube or social media, but you won't find any that are actually set in California! Here in SoCal we have our own unique strain of Gleocapsa magma. Our moderate humidity levels promote its growth, but also cause it to embed deep into the tile pores. Chemical soft washing kills the organic material, but low pressure will not completely rinse it away. The only way to completely clean roof tiles in California is with an herbicide treatment and pressure rinse. This process is required to get avoid homeowners insurance non-renewals and/or cancellations.
Cleaning asphalt shingles, coated metal roofs, or cedar shakes with high pressure is NOT OK. This will cause permanent damage and degrade the surface of the roof, eliminating its protective qualities. Fortunately, the algae doesn't embed nearly as deep on these roof surfaces, and soft washing techniques ARE sufficient for cleaning, including insurance renewals.
